Autocamperoffer a bright, bittersweet antidote to Manchesters greyscale post-punk leanings. Fronted by vocalist-guitarist Jack Harkins and keyboardist Niamh Purtill, their debut album captures the spirit of 80s jangle pop with warm harmonies, candid lyricism, and no trace of retro cosplay.
Recorded at Glasgows Green Door Studio with Chris McCory of Catholic Action, the album moves beyond the band’s bedroom pop beginnings without losing its raw emotional core. Harkins relaxed Northern lilt pairs with Purtills hushed vocals in a dynamic that recalls the call-and-response charm of The Vaselines, delivered with a gentle nod to the sincerity of 60s sunshine pop.
Their sound pulls from early Flying Nun and Sarah Records DIY scenes, balancing melodic immediacy with emotional depth. Map Like a Leaf features flute from Tom Crossley of The Pastels, while Dogsitting nods to Felt with off-kilter organ lines. The rhythm section Harry Williams (bass) and Arthur Robinson (drums) evokes both the tight pulse of The Feelies and the melodic bounce of The Field Mice.
